HIPAA in Transportation

How privacy obligations extend to couriers, vehicles, and the documents and devices they carry.

Transportation touches protected health information

Specimen labels, requisitions, patient records, and pharmacy packaging routinely contain protected health information. A transportation provider handling those items is handling PHI, and should be treated accordingly in vendor management.

Practical safeguards

Practical safeguards include trained personnel, sealed or opaque containment, secured vehicle storage, minimum-necessary access, and prohibitions on photographing or discussing shipment contents.

Training should be documented and refreshed, and providers should be able to produce evidence of it on request.
